I was moved by those tears, especially since those tears were shed by a man who hardly shows emotions on the court.
I am glad Roger Federer wept. I am glad he let it out. Finally, he is not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve. Now I know Roger Federer is human too.
Oh how I bleed for you, Roger! I, and a million more out there, have our hearts out for you! My good friend, Lanie, even wrote in my Facebook wall, "God, Roger, it's killing me too".
I think that because Roger cried, he has endeared himself to both fans and non-fans alike. My cousin, Ena, who was rooting for Rafael Nadal, just felt for Roger. She has become an instant fan. Lanie even said that she felt sorry for Nadal because the crowd in the Rod Laver Arena was consoling Roger rather than cheering for Rafa, the champion.
Today, Grand Slam number 14 remains elusive. But Federer doesn't really need another title to make history. He has already made it. Vijay Armitraj was so spot-on. Today, Nadal won because he is the best tennis player AT THE MOMENT. But Roger Federer is still the best tennis player OF ALL TIME.
It certainly isn't over for this Swiss Mister who embodies finesse and grace in tennis. He may be down, but he is definitely not out. I know he has a long way to go. His style of tennis does not rely on brute strength which is very contingent on age. I believe Federer still has many tricks to pull from his sleeve. And I hope one of those tricks is a surprise win at Roland Garros. Now, that would make him remake history twice over. I can't wait for May/June. I am looking forward to the French Open already.
